Washington Apple Cheddar and Bacon Panini

Golden, crispy sourdough, gooey melted cheese, smoky bacon, and the sweet crunch of Gala Washington apples, this is a sandwich lover’s dream. The balance of sweet and savory makes every bite irresistible, while a drizzle of honey and a touch of onion jam add layers of rich, caramelized flavor. 

Gala Washington apples are known for their firm texture, natural sweetness, and refreshing crispness, making them perfect for adding contrast to rich, savory dishes. In this panini, the apple provides a bright, juicy crunch that balances the smoky, salty bacon and creamy melted cheese. 

Apple Cheese Panini

If you don’t have a panini press you can use a heavy pan to make this sandwich. Press down on it as you are browning it.

We suggest pairing this sandwich with an arugula salad with lemon vinaigrette for a fresh contrast, or a warm bowl of butternut squash for cozy comfort.  Whether for a quick lunch or a special meal, it’s guaranteed to satisfy!

Washington Apple Cheddar and Bacon Panini

Yields 4 servings

Ingredients:
4 tablespoons onion jam
8 slices sourdough bread
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
1 1/2 cups shredded Swiss or Colby cheese
1 Gala Washington Apple, thinly sliced
8 slices cooked bacon
honey, for drizzling
1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaf

Directions:

  1. Heat a Panini press or large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Spread the outside of each slice of bread with soft butter. Spread the inside of half of the slices of bread with onion jam. On top of the jam, evenly layer the cheeses, apples, and bacon. Drizzle honey over top and sprinkle with thyme. Add the top piece of bread, buttered side facing up.
  3. Place the sandwiches, one at a time, into the Panini press and cook until the cheese is melted. Serve each sandwich with a drizzle of honey and fresh thyme.
