Char Siu Style Pork

This post is also available in / Esta entrada también está disponible en ESPAÑOL (SPANISH)

This pork recipe was part of our #mealprep this week. We love that this recipe is prepared ahead of time since you need to marinate the pork for 24 hrs to really get the flavor into the meat. The next day you just need to bake it. We served this over fried rice and it was so flavorful! We recommend including a cucumber salad as a side.

We used the same marinade for boneless chicken thighs, and it was amazing! Just leave them marinating, for at least 1 hour. Let them come to room temperature before pan-grilling them for 4 to 5 minutes on each side.

You can also prepare this pork recipe to serve as an appetizer by itself, it pairs really well with beer! Or, you can use it to make delicious sandwiches.

You can find Chinese Five Spice blend in Asian ingredient stores or in the gourmet section of your supermarket.

Fried Rice

Char Siu Style Pork

Recipe adapted from Pups with Chop Sticks
Yields: 4-6 servings

Ingredients:

Marinade:
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 cloves garlic
4 slices of ginger
1 teaspoon Chinese five spice powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
½ tsp red pepper flakes

2-3 lbs pork tenderloin

Glaze:
2 tablespoons honey
leftover marinade

Procedure:

  1. The tenderloin will usually be packed into 2 long strips, which is what we need.
Combine the ingredients of the marinade into a ziplock bag and add the pork. Toss well to coat and let marinate in the refrigerator for 24 hours
  2. Prepare the Glaze: Remove the meat from the marinade and let it sit for an hour at room temperature before cooking. Add all the marinade to a small pot including the chunks of garlic and ginger. Add 2 tablespoons of honey into the marinade and mix well. Cook it on low heat on a stove for 5 minutes or when the sauce starts to boil. Set it aside for later.
  3. Line a sheet pan with foil before setting down a metal rack over it for easier cleanup. Using a metal rack over the sheet pan also will give the char siu proper airflow to roast in the oven. Place the meat on top of the rack.
  4. Pre-heat the oven to 400F, when it has reached the temperature bake the pork for 15 minutes.
  5. Flip the pork and cook for another 15 minutes
  6. Increase the oven temperature to 425F
  7. For the next 20 minutes, flip and glaze the meat every 5 minutes until all the glaze is brushed on. Remove from the oven and let it rest for 10-15 minutes, cut it up and enjoy!
