When living in a small apartment, sometimes you need to find new uses for your current appliances and utensils. In our case, we both love our French press for coffee… but did you know we can make so much more out of them? In this post we’ll show you how to make a perfect brew, how to froth milk and make perfect hot chocolate milk.
We find that the French Press is an amazing tool, often put away after making coffee. Since they are made of glass and have removable parts, we can use it in a wide variety of recipes using different types of ingredients and the press won’t be left with any residual flavors or scents. You can also use it to make flavored water, steep tea and even make flavored oils.

The Perfect Brew
2 servings
Ingredients:
2 cups water
¼ cup ground coffee beans (not instant coffee)
Procedure:
- Place the ¼ cup of ground coffee beans in the French press.
- Add the 2 cups of hot water to the French press.
- Stir vigorously with a spoon, using an up and down motion.
- Steep for 4 minutes for a robust brew, shorter if you want a softer brew.
- Plunge the press: When the timer goes off, immediately press the plunger all the way to the bottom.
- Serve immediately.
Froth Milk
2 servings
Ingredients:
1 cup of whole milk
Procedure:
- Bring the milk to a simmer in a small pot.
- Pour the hot milk (filling no more than a third of the container) into the French press and plunge vigorously until the milk increases in volume, filling up the French press.
- Serve immediately into two cups. Carefully, pour prepared coffee down one side of each cup.
Hot Chocolate
2 servings
Ingredients:
10-oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup whole milk
Procedure:
- Add the chocolate chips to the French press.
- Bring the milk to a simmer.
- Pour the hot milk over the chocolate chips, and place the plunger top on the pot, but don’t press it yet.
- Let the milk sit for 2 minutes so it softens the chocolate.
- Plunge vigorously for 1 minute to froth the hot chocolate. It will increase in volume.
- Pour into 1 large or 2 small cups, and serve immediately.
