Bake a Difference: Cupcakes for Toys

This post is also available in / Esta entrada también está disponible en ESPAÑOL (SPANISH)

The cat is out of the bag! We are co-hosting our first ever Bake Sale! A few months ago, we went to the launch of a new magazine called The Baking Room, put together by Mariade and Miryang. After getting together, that one coffee turned into a mini-planning meeting for this Bake Sale. We knew we couldn’t do it alone, so we called in Pili from Vitas Mercado Gourmet and Carmen from Cioccolato Arte en Chocolate. They all make amazing desserts: cakes, chocolates, cookies… ice cream macaroon sandwiches. All delicious and beautiful desserts.  After all of the meetings and name brainstorming, we realized we needed a great foundation to help out. Turns out that we were able to get in touch with DAR, a program by Fundacion Manuel y Concha Ralda.

Bake A Difference-01

So, here we are, extremely happy to share this big news with you! We have been testing recipes, so you know that the cupcakes will be good! Soon we will be sharing the flavors that we will have available that day. But before we get into details about Bake A Difference: Cupcakes for Toys, we want to share some more information about the program we will be collecting those toys for.

DAR (Distrito de Alto Rendimiento)

DAR, who get their name from its initials in spanish, means High Performance District.  They are a program from the Fundación Manuel Concha y Ralda that help children who live in extreme poverty by focusing on physical and mental health, nutrition, education as well as spiritual guidance. The school is located in Ocosito, Retalhuleu, a community located about 180 km (110 miles)  from Guatemala City. About 51% of all guatemalans live in poverty, and 15% of them live with under $1 a day in a rural area. They definitely need our help.

Since we know we have readers from all over the world, we know that not everybody can make it to the Bake Sale. That’s why we are sharing with you a link directly to their site, where you can make a donation, small or big, it makes a huge difference in the lives of the children.

For those who live in Guatemala, we invite you to collect toys. The toys can be new or used, as long as they are working and not broken. Remember that these toys are going to make many kids very happy during the holidays. You have about 4 weeks to do so, and when the day comes, head out to Centro Gourmet KitchenAid, in Paseo Cayalá and we will trade your toys and hard work for delicious goodies!
