Basil Syrup

I always like to look around for recipes that will give simple things like adding sugar to a beverage a little something extra. I use this syrup to sweeten iced tea and lemonade, because basil gives it a special and aromatic sweetness. If you can find the time to make it, I recommend it.  It really takes no time at all to make, you just have to wait for the sugar to dissolve in the hot water.  Find a little time to keep natural beverages available at home, especially if you have kids.

I’ve been searching for dried lavender to try lavender syrup as a sweetener, but for the life of me… I haven’t been able to find it, I don’t think its available in Guatemala. If anyone knows where I can find some here, let us know!

Basil Syrup

A Foodies’ Kitchen original recipe
Makes about 1 cup of syrup

Ingredients:
1 cup water
¾ cup sugar
1 cup fresh basil

Directions:

  1. Bring water and sugar to a boil in a small saucepan, stirring until sugar dissolves.
  2. Remove from heat, add basil, and let steep for 10 minutes.
  3. Remove the basil with a slotted spoon of with a strainer.  Let cool completely and refrigerate. You can keep the syrup in the fridge to use as a single serving sweetner, or use it to sweeten a pitcher of iced tea or lemonade.
